As unconventional a pop artiste as wide-eyed London songstress Lily Allen may purport to represent, it still feels decidedly apt that she should’ve opted to out upcoming single, Air Balloon, on a Monday morning. That on which singles were once traditionally released, its uploading today seems distinctly fitting for one of Britain’s last remaining mainstream provocateurs. Of the song itself, well, you half expect Allen to burst into that bit of Paper Planes, “Some some, some I, some I murder”, midway through as Allen subtly perpetuates the rather more overt polemicism of Hard Out Here with a track that some will somewhat reasonably consider a butchering of M.I.A.’s magnum opus. But, lyrics of her “uncle’s monkey” and Cobain name-drops notwithstanding, Air Balloon proves a perfectly measured, flighty ditty the like of which have been in all too short supply in recent years. Thus irrespective of flagrant plagiaristic qualms, Air Balloon makes for an inspired contemporary pop tune to carefreely “sing, sing along, along” to.
Air Balloon is anticipated March 2nd on Regal Recordings.
