Both Germanic hip hop and the man widely regarded as one of its pivotal contributors, DJ Koze, are entities I know little, to next to nothing of. And so as far as first impressions go, I’m therefore initially left nothing but perplexed by this one: its title a snide jibe at our modern-day infatuation with achieving an immaculate awareness of all which recurrently leads some of us to decompose each and every mix ever made, Track ID Anyone? came to my attention due to another element of this so-called ID: ‘feat. Caribou‘. Again, in the same way I’d have no idea as to what to expect of the central European urban genre stylisation Koze (aka Stefan Kozalla) once coined, a collaboration between Dan Snaith and an enigma shot in martial garb sat atop a reindeer amidst a field of hallucinogenic purple hills is somewhat beyond my realms of natural comprehension. Though perseverance is a virtue, and what Track ID Anyone? eventually boils down to is a natty pop track infused with the eccentric, and mutedly ethnic idiosyncrasies of Dan’s Swim, as well as the shuffling synth progressions of every last Hot Chip effort. “We need to eat, and we need to sleep, and we need music” an android voiceover avows, before the nagging euphoria unfurls: littered with deep blurts of bass and Snaith’s typically neat vocal, it’s one for the hip of Stoke Newington to hop to though if DJ Koze may still be considered a clinician of the genre, then I’m Ralf Hütter.
Track ID Anyone? is lifted from DJ Koze’s forthcoming Amygdala full-length, expected March 26th via his very own Pampa Records.
