An Utter Hoot, Valentina.

An Utter Hoot, Valentina.

Few glorious dance recordings slipped right on under the radar like nitty grit under the carpet as did Valentina’s Gabriel back in 2011. And that, despite having been put together by Joe Goddard and put out by Greco-Roman. It has, I ought add, since cashed in on some of the acclaim it indubitably warrants though it’s the versatility that Valentina this time illustrates that’ll surely stand her in good stead for further accolades if not immediately, then doubtless by the time a full-length comes along. Wolves was this time devised by our beloved kwes. and it shows in the finely nuanced backdrop onto which her immaculate voice may be painted: an impressionistic tone coloured over vivid strings, bits of momentary silence, and nifty rhythmic minimalism Wolves never has to bear its jagged gnashers to gnaw its way right on into your ribcage and indeed your braincase, as you may yet find yourself singing this one “in your sleep”…

Valentina plays The Shacklewell Arms alongside label mate Roosevelt February 28th.
