Angel Olsen, Intern.

Serving as both the introductory sliver to, and the opening number of, Angel Olsen’s latest – this September’s MY WOMAN – it would seemingly be eminently foolish to assume the follow-up to the lonesome, longing Burn Your Fire For No Witness should be all lucid, argent synths and silvery wigs. But not since Goldfrapp flitted between the ambient, bucolic Felt Mountain and the besequinned chintz of Black Cherry has so pronounced a step from acoustic contemplation to electro-poppy perfection been made. And, as she begins with the lyric, “Maybe you know that it’s been too long/ Going through the motions, as you sing your song/ Doesn’t matter who you are, or what you’ve done/ Still gotta wake up and be someone,” Olsen sounds acutely cognisant of the dangers of standing still, or sitting on a sound for too long, only to consequently evanesce into nothingness. Moreover, very much echoing sentiments voiced by labelmates Preoccupations, the subsequent line, “I just wanna be alive, make something real” suggests she’s well aware of how best to combat that, preventing her fire from burning out any time prematurely. In and of its essence, it’s magnificent stuff; and reason enough to “fall in love” all over again…

MY WOMAN will be available from Friday, 2nd September, via Jagjaguwar, while Angel Olsen plays KOKO on Monday, 17th October [INFO/TICKETS].
