Angel Olsen, Lark.

If the title track to Angel Olsen’s forthcoming All Mirrors full-length suggested a more orchestral, grandiose scope than ever previously, then its opening number – entitled Lark – fully reflects this supposition. Materialising from amidst a soft flurry of strings, a trademarkedly stark guitar sits centrally in the mix without ever really commandeering your attention – more a far reminder of her raspy Burn Your Fire For No Witness era than the focal driving force it once was – as Olsen reminisces, somewhat ruefully, about a relationship in ruins while “hiding out inside [her] head”. “If only we could start again, pretending we don’t know each other,” she’ll lament with over-it undertones and general nonchalance unmistakably manifest, although this latest regeneration – at once familiar, yet infinitely more commanding than ever before – makes for quite the restart.

All Mirrors is available from October 4th via Jagjaguwar, while Angel Olsen plays the Eventim Apollo on February 11th.
