Another Week; Another Thoroughly Entertaining Rework. Phoenix.

First J Mascis put a pretty stupefied spin on Phoenix’ Entertainment, and now the buck stops with Dev Hynes, aka Lightspeed Champion, aka Blood Orange who, in a bizarre twist of fate, has roped in dejected onetime Sugababes Mutya Keisha Siobhan to chip in some almost unfeasibly impeccable pop harmonies on what aurally resembles a cut and paste patchwork quilt of contemporary musical culture. From the princely Purple Rain guitar solo the middle eight comes showered in, to the humid R’n’B rhythmic agitation, the primordial Balearic mating calls à la Crystal Fighters as the radical overhaul approaches its illogical conclusion, and of course the concise snippets of original it’s an absolute tour de force in modern-day production expertise and subsequent execution. Sure, there’s a bit where Thomas Mars is made to sound like Chris Martin somewhere just gone the two-minute mark but we can forgive every last illustrious someone involved that.

Phoenix release fifth studio full-length Bankrupt! April 22nd, ahead of a sold out date at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire the following soir.
