I’d imagine an uncountable rabble of inner ears to have squealed at the somewhat unexpected news emanating outta highbrow Montréal outfit BRAIDS’ tweet-tweet last Monday, as the missive read: ‘Oh, THE RECORDS DONE !!!!!‘ Personally, I’d choose to paraphrase and pummel in a few more exclamation marks myself, and as if that weren’t enough unadulterated excitement for one week, well, the band’s peach-cheeked heroine Raphaelle Standell-Preston here returns under the pseudonymic guise of Blue Hawaii –alongside longstanding collaborator Alex Cowan, of course. Lifted from forthcoming sophomore Untogether, Try To Be is another feathery composition that’s so light and unsuspecting that it’s almost as though it’s never there: comprised of little else other than a hushed acoustic and Standell-Preston’s unusually mantric cooing, it’s one to enwrap in cotton and stuff away inside a pendant cushioned only by the left peck. In all sincerity, I know of no other operating contemporarily with claims to not one, but two acts of such continually exemplary output as she.
Untogether is anticipated March 4th on Arbutus Records.
