Back Banging the Can, Cyclopean.

Back Banging the Can, Cyclopean.

It’s now well nigh on six months ago that Irmin Schmidt’s Can came back with a provocative bang on the old memory, as they and Mute packaged up The Lost Tapes for widespread consumption. Well, continuing to strike whilst the aluminium is still aglow, he and fellow cofounder Jaki Liebezeit have since formed Cyclopean, a project on which they’re aided in sonic deviancy by longstanding collaborative forces Burnt Friedman and Jono Podmore. The lead track from a four-track slated for an early 2013 release (again via Daniel Miller’s Mute, of course), Fingers is a twitchy and ultimately amorphous affair: hingeing off nebulous billows of synth and ethnic twangs, it indeed feels altogether new and thoroughly vibrant, though this is in no way less invigorating than The Lost Tapes were, for me, educative. Another enlightening chapter in Schmidt’s histories this way comes.

The eponymous EP is released February 4th via Mute.
