‘Birthed from necessity and abandon, not rising from ashes’, there’s not one second to Californian A r t i f a c t s’ latest contrivance, Barely Cared, to suggest Domonic Renee writes for any reason other than his conviction that he absolutely has to. Musically, the track proves immediately redolent of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s supple, eponymous ’05 début, while lyrically, Renee favours couplets that could otherwise sound overly earnest, were they not delivered with such riveting disaffection. “I fall asleep in the day/ Take me away from this pain/ I thought it went away/ It’s too late, it’s too late” he’ll concede, although the Californian’s salad days may now be about to begin in earnest.
