The louche talent of Floridian Lotharios Merchandise became undeniable now some while ago, and yet you couldn’t help but sense their somewhat distended, indeed distractible back catalogue could do with a rather severe trimming, so long as some external observer were handling the shears. And it thus makes perfect sense that the Tampa scamps have, since last seen last summer, signed with revered indie 4AD, the newly expanded five-piece marking the beginning of this particular working rapport with a limited 12″ rereleasing of Begging For Your Life / In The City Light – a track first put out on a sought-after cassette, the spools of which were split between this and that, that being a previously unreleased number from onetime touring partners, Chelsea Light Moving.
The below is but a lowly edit, with the original weighing in at a sinewy fourteen minutes, although bolstered by the haywire sax toots of the recently incorporated and aptly named Chris Horn, there’s about as much fat to said original as there is to Iggy Pop. Which makes for a pretty apposite comparison, given that Begging For Your Life / In The City Light recalls the Stooges at their maniacal best. 4AD may yet extract exactly that from them.
Begging For Your Life / In The City Light is anticipated on one-sided vinyl February 24th via 4AD.
