Broadening Horizons, Paula.

Broadening Horizons, Paula.

It’s with a worrying infrequency that a record as recurrently compelling as Relaxed Fit – the début solo full-length from onetime Silly Kisser and TOPS trooper David Carriere, aka Paula – comes along, and rarer still that it’s accredited with the acclaim it so apparently merits. It was thus that one of the great throwback synth-pop albums of recent times was swept under the carpets of public consciousness, although as Carriere returns to the gizmos from which it was first manufactured to conjure the gloriously urgent insistence of Black Acura, he may yet get us back on track. Mercifully far removed from Pac Div’s misogynistic dross of the same name – if still presumably dedicated to a similarly monochromic automobile – Paula’s take is an appositely racy lil’ number clocking in at a touch under three speedy minutes. They combine to comprise, I’d readily contend, one of the quintessential pop tracks of this year thus far, Carriere’s falsetto carrying the track to vertiginous heights with louche aplomb come its truly sublime chorus. Invigorating as a heedless joyride through Downtown Montréal, it hurtles off over the horizon all too soon…

Relaxed Fit can still be picked up via Arbutus Records.
