Yet another deal with a different Kim has again been shattered by widely lionised indie curmudgeons the Pixies since the magical MA four-piece were last in London, then enthralling the Eventim Apollo. But unannounced, as now seems their wont, the newly slim-lined outfit last weekend released EP 2 to, well, typically mixed acclaim. And away from the serpentine slink of Snakes, the slippery majesty of Magdalena and the acoustic languor of Greens And Blues is Blue Eyed Hexe – a song we can but suppose Kim Shattuck could anchor with her brown eyes closed. It’s as close as Black Francis, David Lovering and Joey Santiago, plus Paz Lenchantin for the time being, have come to all-out eyeliner-lined glam-rock since, well, ever really, Santiago’s guitar packing enough punch to crunch Angus Young’s knobbly knees good ‘n’ proper. That it comes with cowbells last heard ringing in The Darkness’ One Way Ticket on makes it that bit more bizarre still, but normalcy, peace and quietude never really suited the Pixies, anyways.
EP 2 is out now, while the Pixies play London’s Field Day June 8th.
