Brain Fog, Christina Vantzou.

Brain Fog, Christina Vantzou.

Polymathic neo-classicist Christina Vantzou last month released her sophomore solo full-length, Nº2, to a reaction that was, alas, subdued as the album itself. However, if you’ve previously experienced the spellbinding Going Backwards to Recover What was Left Behind, then you’ll be only too aware of just how singular a talent Vantzou really is, and Brain Fog – again from the aforementioned record – really is no exception.

Built about droning swells and repressed strings that do their utmost to surge, this is a composition of stark, so too remarkable poise that rattles and hums to the murky anguish of the underworld, whilst simultaneously pertaining to a somehow celestial luminosity. Rarely are darkness and light so brilliantly juxtaposed, and so we can but hope to shed a little more light on Vantzou…

Nº2 is out now on Kranky.
