Charlotte Gainsbourg, Deadly Valentine.

Whereas the Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo-produced title track to Charlotte Gainsbourg’s forthcoming Rest full-length had a wholly doleful tone to it, conversely, Deadly Valentine is a downright killer electro riot uproarious enough for you to forgive your every mid-noughties misgiving, and recoronate Pedro Winter as the execrable king of all things social and/ or sonic. Of course, the less that’s said about Ed Banger et al. the better these days, but there really are precious few words capable of successfully expressing the unfettered joie de vivre that flows through the pulsating veins of these 363 seconds. And this is due – in no small part, no less – to said label’s signee, SebastiAn: his underlying production may be bold and unabashedly brash, but perhaps improbably, it provides the perfect foil for Gainsbourg’s aloof, largely annular leitmotif, “With this ring, I thee wed/ With all my worldly goods, I thee endow/ To love and to cherish, according to God’s holy ordinance.” And by God, this is bloody loveable stuff once again…

Rest is available from November 17th via Because Music.
