On the Horizon: Cleansing, Howl.

On the Horizon: Cleansing, Howl.

“The night is never as glamorous as you wanted it to be” informs the seemingly world-weary Josh Banham – anonym Howl, stylised as ‘hxwl’, or even ‘hxxxwl’ from time to time – and although still boyish, the London-based artiste constructs intricate soundscapes to belie his tender years. Commensurately momentous a commitment is the kicking of any which habit at the behest of someone else, and this is the slightly unlikely subject matter about which Clean revolves. “I can’t get clean for you” he keens, continuing: “I can’t stay here for you” atop hollow keys reminiscent of Damon Albarn’s early Gorillaz recordings and a refined urban sparsity redolent of ANG LOW’s considerably more contemporary work.
