Walk This Way? M.I.A.

With her vanguardist outpour becoming increasingly scatterbrained by the day, it’s little wonder Maya Arulpragasam’s forthcoming single, Come Walk With Me, winds up sounding not altogether dissimilar to a fairly rudimentary GarageBand mix. UNBREAK my Mixtape, even. For if this is the sound of “M.I.A. comin’ back wi’ power” then she’s a strange perception of said force as although it might begin with staccato keys to suggest she may be about to unveil her most accessible and openly sublime crossover smash since Paper Planes, what follows is a right hotchpotch that’s about as fluid as a stodgy egg hopper. Major Lazer restiveness meets with agitated samples of shifting MacBook volumes; terse bursts of industrial drums (a snippet of Nine Inch Nails’ 1,000,000, maybe?) crumpled over dancehall hysteria and a chord progression simultaneously reminiscent of both U2’s Beautiful Day and Kathleen Edwards’ Change The Sheets. Quite where this leaves the multicultural avant-pop polymath remains pretty ambiguous, although it doubtless only heightens the intrigue with which forthcoming fourth Matangi will surely be met…

Matangi is anticipated November 4th via Interscope.
