On the Horizon: Freshening Right Up, MOLD BOY.

Brooklyn may well have revelled in Captured Tracks’ five year celebrations this weekend, luxuriating in a bonus one-off from Pissfather – the label’s embryonic supergroup seemingly comprising Zachary Cole Smith, Mac DeMarco, Dustin Payseur and Jack Tatum – though it was Alex Calder I’d have been most psyched to have seen. And it was he who some while ago turned a couple attentions to fellow montréalais lo-fi minstrel MOLD BOY, whose gently elegiac toons could fit right in Mike Sniper’s crosshairs for sure. Rewind My Mind, the fulcrum of a majestic début EP seemingly bereft of any traditional form of title, incidentally recalls much of Calder’s sublime Time endeavour of last spring, with its blasé guitars and the indolent diction of its author reminiscent of many a slacker supremo.

Although its opener, Lost My Day, is the real triumph here, its giddying summertime vibe the closest anyone outside of Deerhunter has come to jangle-addled jollity capable of simultaneously inspiring corporeal movement and cerebral motion. Chris Cohen too would’ve swooned…
