alt-Just OUTST∆NDING, BE∆CH HE∆RT.

If there’s one alt code almost everyone appears to be aware of, then it’s alt-J: ∆. And whether the delta sign is seen acutely topping festival bills or smeared abundantly across SoundCloud, it’s become something of an all-pervasive convention in recent times. Such gratuitous stylisation is, at least subjectively, a little deterring as it frequently seems to detract from the music being associated with it. Nonetheless, some adjustments must be made to the general rule from time to time, and this is true of Louisville, Kentucky dream-pop practitioner BE∆CH HE∆RT.

Following on from the quietly sublime Primavera of last summer comes Ghost Beach – a rather more propulsive, if no less euphoric piece. Its synths squelchy as a freshly deceased jellyfish underfoot on the beaches of Barça, it’s a wistful song of longing mischievously enwrapped in a crispy synthpop coating. ”I was such a fool to think that I could live without you near me” continues a prolix confessional atop reverberant undulations and dainty arpeggi, its delivery unashamedly raw as its tender sentiment. Then, “Help me find your love, ’cause I let it get away” pleads the song’s inscrutable narrator amidst a flurry of synthetic frenzy come its suitably showy crescendo, its melodramatic climax explosive as a megabuck firework array. And certainly, you’d be unwise to allow BE∆CH HE∆RT to drift into the periphery of thought from hereon in…
