Combining vox evocative of Empress Of, unsettling susurrations reminiscent of Suuns and brass arrangements redolent of those both known and renowned of Tony Finno, it’s fair to say that a lot of fairly incongruous bits and bobs have come together to create Last Night. But at its core, Toronto, Canadian Hoodlem’s latest is, purely and simply put, a truly intoxicating pop song, to which its choral leitmotif: “I was thinkin’ ’bout last night with you/ Boy, I lose my mind/ I’m still thinkin’ ’bout last night with you/ Never felt so right” quite transparently attests. Refracted through fleeting reflections of ’90s R&B and, more intermittently, UKG, it makes for what is not only an intriguing track, but a very reinvigorating one as well.
