When A Soundless Echo from Badalona beatmonger Sau Poler began to ring around SoundCloud a little earlier on in the year, I couldn’t help but feel that one of the Iberian Peninsula’s greater nascent producers was due a little more revere than he was eventually afforded. For Poler has a keen ear for an oddly affecting brand of Hi-NRG electronica that perhaps has more in common with the Brainfeeder catalogue than it does that of compatriot John Talabot. And his latest, the immersive blip and squelch-fest that is Illusion Of Time, sees him move into murkier, if no less magnificent territories still.
A conflation of Immunity insistence, contorted vocal samples reminiscent of There Is Love In You and wide, open Chemical Bros. impact, all of which sounds as though it’s getting loaded on the fumes from RocketNumberNine’s Neneh Cherry collaboration, Illusion Of Time could yet prove that which propels Sau Poler to greater international acclaim. For this is itself hyper-modern techno excellence, plus proof that, in the shadows cast by Sónar, something quietly special is still alive and well.
