Interpol, Number 10.

If The Rover – derived from their forthcoming Marauder full-length – heard Interpol return to their driving, innately accessible best, then Number 10 (below) is that bit more skittish by contrast. More evocative – to a certain extent – of their seminal 2002 début Turn On the Bright Lights therefore, skyscraping guitars reminiscent of later work may initially loom large, although those are soon razed in favour of erratic stabs, trashy garage-rocky drums, and piercing siren-like sounds, as Paul Banks sings of “gallivanting heart[s]” with typical insistence. A messier number, maybe, but this latest effort is no less stimulating for it.

Marauder is available from August 24th via Matador Records, while Interpol play the Royal Albert Hall on November 14th and 15th.
