Revelling in the Disreputable, Xiu Xiu.

Revelling in the Disreputable, Xiu Xiu.

Jamie Stewart enjoyed a delightfully bipolar end to 2013, releasing Nina Simone tribute LP Nina last month, having unleashed visceral synthetic beast Stupid In The Dark the previous. From a subjective perspective, the latter narrowly trumped the former, standing firm as Stewart’s most aggressively accessible song in yonks, although such textured erraticism suits him down to the dirty ground. And a second from Xiu Xiu’s forthcoming, once again totally obliterative full-length record, Angel Guts: Red Classroom, may be seen as an even more self-destructive tour de force, for atonal to the last, Lawrence Liquors sounds more like a petrifying Narcozep trip than a rum bender. Indeed, so aurally savage is Lawrence Liquors that a more abstinent listener may wish for it to be hidden within a brown paper bag until the dawn of some apocalyptic watershed in complete societal decay, for fear of its lascivious charm reconditioning the pure. That said, if you feel there’s already little left to lose, you could do far worse than to revel in the disreputable below…

Angel Guts: Red Classroom is anticipated February 3rd on Bella Union.
