“Vision Running Wild”, Grizzly Bear.

To tell a brutalised truth, it’s taken me some while to sink meaningful teeth into Grizzly Bear, only to subsequently sink totally into their lavish charm musical. I’ve listened, and waited, and with last year’s release of their fourth studio full-length, Shields – an LP I again belatedly came to fully appreciate last spring – finally surrendered irrevocably. The Texan demo of Will Calls – a number that inexplicably slipped from Shields’ finalised tracklisting – tightened the vicelike grip over my every emotion to a forcible sort of bear hug, while another bonus track again lifted from the ambidextrous four-piece’s forthcoming Shields: Expanded rerelease, Listen and Wait, further constricts the captivating grasp they hold over oh, so many. Atop thundering floor toms and archetypally sumptuous vocal harmonies, Daniel Rossen tells of “vision running wild”. And when they’ve such expansive soundscapes held back in reserve, few could begrudge them the indulgence of a multi-format reissue, for Listen and Wait is itself the sound of creative vision unbridled. Better yet is there’s plenty more where this one came from…

Shields: Expanded is expected November 11th via Warp.
