Madeline Kenney, Sucker.

When you’ve got Wye Oak backing you up, you must be doing something right; when Kurt Wagner’s tar-stained tones also feature, all the more so. Thus, Madeline Kenney reintroduces herself, with Sucker. Expectorated from her forthcoming third full-length Sucker’s Lunch – expected this summer – it’s a fulfilling luxury feast of Seu Jorge-ian guitar, gambolling bass courtesy of Jenn Wasner, woodwind instrumentation reminiscent of Andy Shauf’s The Bearer of Bad News, and topped off with Andy Stack’s typically expressive percussion. Yet for all of her esteemed associates, Kenney unmistakably remains the star attraction, her vocal cottony as she thinks “back [to] when life was fun”. Incidentally, in doing so, she’s alleviated the quotidian tedium severalfold.

Sucker’s Lunch is available from July 31st via Carpark Records.
