On the Horizon: Stoking Something Resplendent, The John Steel Singers.

Somehow managing to lasso together the flagrant eccentricities of the Super Furry Animals, the gawky lyrical allure of Hot Chip and the outward dementia of the alas, these days defunct Clor, MJ’s On Fire Again from outré Brisbane five-piece The John Steel Singers makes for a source of unlikely beguilement. Because reminiscent of the formermost’s Love Kraft as much as it is a Motown-inflected take on compatriot Luke Steele’s Lovers, The Sleepy Jackson’s sublime début full-length, this disco-flecked stomp really shouldn’t work. Yet overwhelmingly seductive, if zany as MJ himself at his towelled-baby-over-balcony best, The John Steel Singers really are stoking something resplendent here, and it’s one we’d readily condone you strike up below.
