As was with Sincere before it, Never Been hears San Fran noise-pop four-piece Happy Diving pick up more or less precisely where blink-182 left off with Take Off Your Pants And Jacket: beginning with what is fast becoming a trademark bout of feedback, by the time this abates some eight seconds in, Matt Berry’s prepped to tell of how he wishes he “could say what I wanted to say”, his vocal effortlessly searing a slurry of gyrating riffs and thrusting drums. “I’ll be quiet, there’s no need to riot” is the ethos of this one, although another to encapsulate adolescent recklessness, Happy Diving have yet to demonstrate even the slightest design to quieten things down. Yet when they’re this compelling, few could begrudge their keeping things so raw, but above all raucous.
