Boy / girl love songs may be nothing new, but Nice Environment’s sugary If I Said is certainly novel. Trading in the risqué, Gitanes-stained raunch of, par example, Je t’aime moi non plus for a more trademarkedly Welsh deference, slick guitar lines intertwine with slack rhythmic components, as lyrics reminiscent of Belle and Sebastian and Sweet Baboo (“If I said I’d be cool with you taking the weekends out of my life/ Would you be cool with me calling you mine?”) take centre stage. And that is precisely the sort of environment which, on the evidence of this decidedly nice début single, this duo ought to inhabit henceforth.
