There are a ton of bands out there right now ploughing similar furrows to those in which Real Estate have long since been nestled, though there’s this one thing I always pondered of the Ridgewood outfit, and that was (and to a lesser extent still is) thus: why would a band from landlocked New Jersey suburbia wind up sounding like a gaggle of plaintive San Fran slackers gawping out to a softly rippling Pacific? I’ve still no concrete response, though in sonic likeness and locational difference Californians Melted Toys are, to all extensive purposes, the real deal. Their SoundCloud tender an insouciant mélange of blithe lo-fi and lush instrumental (as indeed was Real Estate), one of several standouts is Observations – one which initially sounds a little like Last Christmas, and a lot like something stupidly alluring as multi-textured groans and oh’s combine with plashes of the musically polychromatic to conjure an almost prismatic, or kaleidoscopic effect. Put this one up to the sun, and prepare to be get burned.
