If you’ll pardon the pun, we’ve never been particularly Crazy for covers round these parts though exceptions can, and indeed must be maid for the exceptional, which is the bracket into which Hermosa Beach songstrel Sami’s take on the timeless Willie Nelson number falls like a polished bullet into a cocked barrel. Produced by fellow Californian Josh Kouzomis, aka Troublemaker, its instrumentation seemingly derives dollops of inspiration from the quietly ecstatic soothe of Clams Casino as measured clacks and refined, insouciant synths underpin Sami’s glittering vocal smoulder. Both this and its Vash-directed video unabashedly mimic the yesteryear successes of Lana Del Rey for sure, with the employment of sultrily glamorised torment paramount though when the result is a recording this maddeningly addictive, it’s nigh on impossible not to giddily fall head over heels for the thing – derivations ‘n’ all.
