On the Horizon: Cutting the Crud, Mt. Royal.

Today categorically has to be the low in an itself unspeakably dire week. You know the ones encrusted with an impenetrable crud during which little, to nothing works out alright? Yeah, this is one of those alright. But then occasionally, every now and again, something absolutely blinding permeates the gloom and that, right here and so too right now, comes from Maryland ensemble Mt. Royal. ‘Baltimore City has become known for having a robust and diverse music scene’, or so goes their blurb and though the city’s musical outpour is doubtless robust, I sometimes set about wondering how diverse it can genuinely be deemed. You know, almost everything streaming out of that particular bit of bayside North America at the moment seems to heedlessly be branded dream-pop or a less hyphenated variant thereof though in the case of Mt. Royal, I suppose it’s a tag which is stitched into their very essence. And that’s an irrefutably fine thing when the result is indeed as winsomely refined as is Missing Reward – a crystalline formation of swooping, melodramatic vocals a little à la Legrand, buoyant melancholia, and an infinitely engaging chord progression. Its bass beefy and its guitars lithe, it’s a prize pony the like of which I dream of whisking me away into the weekend…
