My adulation of Bristol’s Howling Owl Records knows no bounds. The glass ceiling is the limit and, like a puff-chested, strigine thing trapped within which repeatedly bashes itself against this transparent upper bound, I helplessly clatter into their outpour incessantly as though a prepubescent caught in the heaving undertow of a No Age show mid-surge. My instant reaction to this one is little, to no different: immediately infectious, their first 2013 release just so happens to have been spewed forth from their first international act, G A L P A L S. An Austin, Texas two-piece trading in scratchy squalls of saccharine garage-pop, For Our Sake is itchy as acne and though it’ll surely provoke a litany of parallels to scatty same-sex contemporaries, theirs is an inimitably scruffy majesty that’s, like, so them. And just as no two scuffed to the verge of totally fucked Chuck Taylors will ever look the same, Jillian Talley and Lauren Marie Mikus’ squalid, surf-flecked thang may yet see them ride G R E A T W A V E S all of their own rousing.
