On the Horizon: Maybe Baby, shak.

Increasingly, I’ve been finding that perhaps the world’s most fertile musical soils at this particular point in time seem to be those coating the island of Australia and the wispy bits of the Netherlands. The former has a firm grip on shoegaze (for which see kigo of moments ago), while the latter appears to have adopted a more liberal approach. Typical. Mineral Beings are, to my ears, one of the region’s brightest hopes whilst in Utrecht’s Le Guess Who? they boast the finest metropolitan festival my feet have yet taken me to. Though straight out that same cultural melting pot comes Shakuru Tajiri, aka shak. and his d├ębut effort, Maybe, U. A wistful instrumental redolent of The Weeknd stripped of Tesfaye’s irksome vocal, its genetics are made up of a soft, slithering guitar which glides tracelessly over a neat knit of hip hop beats. That he’s still five years younger than the considerably less able Abel aforementioned only makes the recording that bit more impressive, and indeed chastening if you, like me, happen to be that little bit older than the both of ‘em…
