On the Horizon: Nostalgic Escapism, Blank Realm.

I suppose two of the longest running thematic leitmotifs in music are those of nostalgia and escapism, and the lead track from a forthcoming rerelease of Blank Realm’s Go Away LP, Cleaning Up My Mess, oozes with oodles of each sensation. On the one hand, it explicitly recalls the likes of Pavement and Sonic Youth, though in doing so it inadvertently harks back to the scuzzier epochs in which the then fuzzier Gordon, Malkmus, Moore, etc. could be found at the peak of their respective powers. Yet with its wilting licks and languid bass lines, this sardonic ode to doting wives from the Brisbane psych powerhouses so too sweeps the mind away from the debilitating slush and descending gloom of London to a Utopian scene embalmed in sun. And there’s little I wouldn’t do to get a ticket to that ride right there right this moment…
