On the Horizon: Salut; ça va? Mister Goodnite.

As far as memorable introductions go, that from rakish Los Angelino and loner lounge provocateur Tyler Parkford, aka Mister Goodnite, features right up there with the brilliant midday sun. Lingering ominously over a scorched California, if they’re currently relative unknowns then it’s the azure skies overhead for which coordinates ought to be set as they had me from the swoonsome opening bars of In Lieu. The reedy seduction of a lonesome clarinet meets with prattling snares, prior to sun-dappled and yet crestfallen vocal harmonies à la the Super Furry Animals colliding with orgasmic soundbites and lyrics of amorous indifference. Ever louche, they soothe: “Even let you fuck other guys” over the kind of tender, richly orchestral fare The Beach Boys could only muster once Dennis Wilson was at the pencil and pad. Whether or not he’d so explicitly rifle through the refuse of a disintegrated rapport I’m rather unsure, although this is surely the most irresistibly coquettish musical stuff since Sébastien Tellier’s Sexuality, and indeed Serge Gainsbourg before him. And as the ostensible Francophiles then conclude: “I’m in lieu of loving you”, I can’t help but sense that truer adoration awaits…
