On the Horizon: San Francisco Calling, Permanent Collection.

In spite of the overtures of my nigh on every acquaintance who’s wound up there since, I’ve not washed up in San Francisco for over twenty years now which, so I’ve been led to believe, is a pretty deplorable reality, really. I’m psyched to be headed back that-a-way I must say, not least as Outside Lands just so happens to take place the weekend we swoop in although West Coast three-piece Permanent Collection just went and ramped up the anticipation tenfold with their brand of knowingly abrasive, slack garage-based post-punk. For a band whose primary intention is to ‘drink beers in a practice space and blow each others ears out with big speakers’, Hate is a remarkably cohesive piece: reminiscent of that distinctive scratchiness of earlier Sonic Youth whilst simultaneously redolent of a cross between the terse tautness of Parquet Courts and the impenetrable sludgefest that is Merchandise on record, it’s an emphatically impressive track the like of which we Brits could never even so much as envisage assembling…
