First Transmission: Rapport, In the Dark.

We’re taking a little time out this morning to shine a light on Toronto, Ontarian trio Rapport, whose In the Dark – from a six-track release of the same name – is a warm, radiant synth-pop master stroke. Vocalist Maddy Wilde’s tangerine locks prove reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper circa She’s So Unusual, although her voice has more in common with many another ’80s mainstay – from multilayered Bananarama harmonies, to a Susanna Hoffs or Martika-type clarity – and really is the incontestable centrepiece. But, propping it up, is a poppy throwback bop recalling label mates TOPS, suggesting Kurt Marble and Mike Pereira shouldn’t dwell solely in Wilde’s shadow.

In the Dark is available now via Arbutus Records.
