There can be little negating contemporary R&B’s flagrant, at times only too ferocious sexualisation, with results ranging from the vibrant (Drake’s Hold On, We’re Going Home) to the deplorably vulgar (The Weeknd’s Initiation). Nonetheless Rebound, the second we’ve yet heard from Dornik, is itself variegated enough to suggest he ought soon shrug off the ‘Jessie Ware’s touring drummer’ tagline. For as percussively propulsive as one might thus anticipate, Rebound pings and pongs between Hi-NRG funk and hyper-smooth soul with whimsical vim. And although its author may irreproachably croon, “Am I just a rebound, rebound, rebound, rebound?/ The thought of you with someone else makes my heart beat, yes it does”, few will likely be able to rebuff such vigorous seduction.
