First Transmission: Silver Liz, Him.

In spite of its woozy, shoegaze disposition, Him – the latest discombobulating blitz from Chicagoan husband-and-wife duo, Silver Liz – clocks in at a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it two minutes, twenty, meaning it sounds not totally dissimilar to an iTunes Preview. This is said in that most complimentary of senses mind, for Carrie and Matt Wagner get into so compelling a groove in this short period of time, that it’s pretty much impossible not to feel as though Him dissipates far too soon: beginning akin to a kind of epithalamium, Carrie professing to feeling “so in love with him,” the pair soon progress to a weighty, tempestuous second half that, at a tad over one minute, somehow manages to condense down so much of the genre’s urgency into a running time that’s spectacularly alien to it. And, while a little disorientating in its latter moments, there’s a whole lot to love here…
