Soleima, Breathe (feat. Kranium & Hoodboi).

For all the polychromy-splattered pleasures of Record Store Day 2017, there was one release – and one release only, really – that stole the proverbial show from my perspective, and that was Soleima’s No. 14. For aside from the fluoro-mucus-coloured plastic on which it was pressed, the budding Dane’s so-called ‘mini album’ proved as perfect a contemporary pop collection as any to have been put out in this past year or so; and from it, Breathe was its wheezy standout. Now, filling the pointed gaps left in the wake of Soleima’s breathy woes (her futile longing to “rerun precious time,” etc.) is Jamaican dancehall prodigy Kranium, who plays the part of Popcaan to Gorillaz’ Saturnz Barz with muted aplomb, recalling Craig David in more bobble-headed days as he does so. Of course, in light of its bright og breezy percussive elements and tropical undertones, it’s an obvious match to have been made, but as Friday night draws nearer, “in times like these”, we’re most grateful for their having done so…

No. 14 is available now, via Parlophone Music Denmark.
