Despite deriving their name from a track beamed down from the Sun Ra Arkestra, I’ve at times struggled to discern much convincingly jazzy impetus – cosmic, or otherwise – in the music of Rocketnumbernine, and certainly the reverse to this forthcoming split-release with Four Tet carried more of Hebden’s upbringings in electronica than it did of the brothers Page’s admiration for the abiding output of Sun Ra, Marshall Allen, et al. It was still an identifiably conspiratorial effort, though with this one the newfangled trio take things to another dimension altogether, as smoky licks whip around Ben’s unremitting surges of bass and Tom’s rippling cymbals with repetition their platform for freeform expression.
