Having previously collaborated with the likes of Lydia Ainsworth, Gruff Rhys and Luke Temple, Danish producer Tomas Barfod has since teamed up with compatriot Jonas Smith – best known as the lead vocalist of the inimitable Blaue Blume – for the quicksilver, cinematic Family. Lifted from his forthcoming Paloma full-length, perhaps improbably, Smith’s yenning falsetto provides the perfect foil for Barfod’s subtly impactive electro-pop, the former’s muddled, typically histrionic rumination on keeping an acquaintance capable of causing him to “become someone I don’t want to be” close “no matter what” quite wonderfully offset by the latter’s scintillating guitars, pulsating synths, et cetera. And thusly, a relatively unlikely coupling spawns a true beauty.
Paloma is available from November 3rd via Friends of Friends.
