First Transmission: TT, Love Leaks.

Loaded with that ineffably low feeling which always follows the phrase, “We need to talk,” Love Leaks – a first from TT, or Theresa Wayman of Warpaint – is as musically involving as it is lyrically lovelorn. “I feel like we fucked up/ Feel like we lost our love,” she’ll lament, before adopting an altogether more reflective tone in reconciling: “I think we knew our time was up.” So far, so straight-forward. However, where this one diverges from the straight, narrow, and whatnot is in its evolutionary nature, a knotty, seemingly extemporised synth line an unlikely genesis for what goes on to become the kind of despondent threnody that Portishead used to fish up from the pits of profound despair with perturbing readiness. Cadaverous bass and cavernous drums combine beneath alarmingly emotionless, layered backing vocals, before the aforesaid synth line returns with both context and clout, accompanied by spectral piano and a newfangled, off-kilter lilt. Quite a way to lay down the LoveLaw, therefore…

Love Leaks is lifted from TT’s forthcoming début album, LoveLaws, which is available from May 18th via LoveLeaks / Caroline International.
