When you’ve had a song rattling around for as long as Katie Crutchfield – aka Waxahatchee – has Chapel of Pines, when at last it comes to its recording, that take has to be absolutely bang on. But such is her contemporary potency – not least in the wake of last year’s sublime Out in the Storm full-length – that there has perhaps never been a better time for this immaculate composition to come to light, as it brings a real (if really bittersweet, somewhat autumnal) warmth to today. Thus although it may well have been written many ago, it now makes for a most enticing introduction to her forthcoming Great Thunder EP.
