Wye Oak’s The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs incontrovertibly contained some of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack’s finest tracks to date, and their latest – entitled Fortune – makes for a brave, very favourable listen also. There’s a whole load going on – free, rangy bass; typically polyrhythmic bits and pieces; stonking great synth outbreaks – but it’s somehow made to pull in completely the same direction, ringled by Wasner’s increasingly statuesque vocal. Factor in some majestic fretwork reminiscent of Hail to the Thief, and it becomes all the more apparent that North America’s most criminally underrated outfit merit infinitely more praise than they’re currently receiving.
