Following on from the loquacious, somewhat knotty, yet totally hypnotic Miami, the title track to Baxter Dury’s forthcoming Prince of Tears full-length hears the Ladbroke Grove lad revert to very recognisable type, as his naturally raspy narration is offset by the sweetness of Madelaine Hart’s gossamer-soft vox. “Prince of Tears, Prince of Tears/ No one’s gonna love you more than us” she coos, ingenuously, rekindling all kinds of fondness for Dury as she does so; but it’s those surging, exemplary strings – reminiscent of The Verve at their vital late ’90s vertex – that pepper the recording which really elevate this one above and beyond all expectation…
