First Transmission: Grooms, Turn Your Body.

In 1998, Air released their undoubted chef-d’œuvre, Moon Safari; several months subsequent, Sonic Youth released the rather more dubious A Thousand Leaves, but never since has any one number seemingly derived equivalent inspiration from the both of them. Well, not until today (or, more accurately, yesterday) that is, as Turn Your Body – a first to emerge from NYC outfit Grooms’ forthcoming album, Exit Index – has as much in common with Talisman (from the former) as it does Contre Le Sexism (from the latter). Flitting (at times schizophrenically, of course) between astral, Fender Rhodes-ian subtleties and dingy, grinding atonalities as though pasted together by the Books in the midst of a sudorous fever dream, it’s a wonder this one works at all; that it works out this wonderfully is making us long to enter into the full-length posthaste…

Exit Index is available from October 20th via Western Vinyl.
