First Transmission: Ruby Haunt, Darling.

Evoking visions of Mazzy Star’s iridescent simplicity, Los Angeles duo Ruby Haunt’s Darling may not be the most complex song you’ll hear today, yet it may be the most hexing. Built about an unchanging bass line, gossamery synths come and go, their impact spectral and passing; similarly lithe guitar parts remain peripheral, rather than prominent; low-key vocals are in consummate keeping with the faintly lugubrious timbre retained throughout. It’s therefore one which doesn’t so much clamour for, as reticently solicit your attention and, one way or another, it subtly works its subdued way into your psyche, where it’ll likely stay a while.
