While Undoing a Luciferian Towers – the near-title track from Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s forthcoming “Luciferian Towers” full-length – ‘buzze[d] stoically between apian drones, loosely Baltic undertones, and saxophones, flutes and trumpets’, Anthem For No State, Pt. III is, quite antithetically, all-out attack. It remains, unmistakably, the work of the inscrutable Canadian ensemble (by way, maybe, of Morricone), although there is a verve to it that hasn’t been heard from them for quite some while now: it’s tempestuous stuff; cantankerous-sounding at times, even. But there’s as much freedom to it as there is this very engaging fervour throughout, making this closing number from that aforementioned release another thoroughly formidable, and downright exciting modicum of what’s to come later on in the month…
